1 in stock - Almost gone!

Until 1868, trains and caravans wishing to cross the United States from west to east, or east to west, came up against a major obstacle: the Mississippi River. To cross it in St. Louis, travelers were systematically extorted by the Cayman brothers, who owned the ferries, hotels and bars. Buchanan Eads, a passionate engineer, got Congress to build a bridge linking the two banks of the Mississippi. Under the impetus of the Cayman brothers, work was interrupted several times. Thanks to Luke, work resumed. To defend their interests, the Cayman brothers incite arson, employee rebellion and the arrest of skilled workers (with the complicity of the friendly sheriff). They prevented the supply of lumber to the site. They shook the bridge piers, pretending the damage was caused by icebergs (in the pay of the Cayman brothers, the MISSOURI REPUBLICAIN headlined: "Icebergs in June! Icebergs in June! There's no more season). They park a steam boat under the bridge, its boiler pushed to the limit. The incandescent slag from the chimney will scare off the workers and set fire to the bridge deck. Despite the criminal acts of the two brothers, and thanks to Lucky Luke, the bridge was inaugurated with great fanfare on July 4, 1874, by President Ullysse S. GRANT. N.B. This story is based on true events. The bridge built by James Eads was inaugurated on July 4, 1874.

FAQ

Here are the answers to the most common questions I get asked, please review them and reach out to me if you need more info on something, I love to help you pick the right book, just for you!

Are the books New?

Yes, all the books that I sell during my bookfairs or online on my e-boutique are brand new.. You will be the very first to flip all the pages and enjoy the feeling of holding your own book in your hand.

What defines the prices of the books?

As a passionate small business owner, my goal is to offer a high level of quality imported from France at the best price. I understand that some people may be surprised by the difference of price between French and American books. In France, books are more expensive as authors and illustrators get larger copyright compensations. Also, imports cost quite a bit if you take into account the price of transport as well as the weight of what is being transported. I appreciate your constant support, when you choose sustainable small businesses over large corporations.

Do you have a shop?

My main way of meeting you is book fairs, festivals and private sales. Ordering online through my e-boutique is the best way to support French Authors and Small Minority Owned business like mine. I also have a physical location present in Orange County accessible via appointment only. Please contact me through text to get more information!
